Fat & Happy

I’ve been anxiously waiting all week to eat at Bud & Marilyn’s, the hot new Marcie Turney and Val Safran spot in the ‘Gayborhood’.

And now as I sit back in the Uber all fat & happy, all I can do is unbutton my jeans and breathe slowly while mentally digesting what I had just experienced.
To start, the 50’s kitsch decor is perfectly fitting to the retro inspired menu.  From the gaudy wallpaper, wood paneling and artwork that flank the walls to the of the era knickknacks  strategically placed throughout, I felt transported back to our first apartment in America.  All furnishings were courtesy of HIAS, all secondhand (now guessing 50’s?), all mismatched but somehow all perfect together to create new immigrant style and comfort.

I dined with new colleagues which meant that we had to be courteous and generous in our ordering so we decided on dishes that we could share and what’s better to share than the good old Pu Pu Platter?  Except that this was no old ordinary Pu Pu but a beautiful cornucopia of Tamarind-peanut spare ribs, tuna & macademia nut poke, shrimp & pork toast, skirt steak teriyaki, sweet & spicy chicken wings and charred shishitos…Delicious!

We then ordered the warm skillet bread, castle valley grits with cheddar & sautéed mushrooms, and not one but 2 orders of the hot buttered buns; chilled lobster and Nashville fried chicken…Double delicious!

A bottle of red and it was time for dessert.  Our neighbors were eating something spectacular so, we ordered the same and that’s how I met the Fat Elvis.

I’ve always dreamed of meeting Elvis and after devouring the roasted peanut butter swirl ice cream, bruleed banana, boozy hot fudge, peanut bacon brittle, homemade marshmallow and brandied cherry, I believe that I have. 
Nothing more to say except that IF Elvis Presley was still alive today, he would say…
