Nothing Says Shabbat Shalom Like Classic Challah
Nothing says Shabbat Shalom like home baked Challah, thanks King Arthur Flour for this Classic Challah recipe!
All you need to make the Dough is:
1/2 cup (113g) lukewarm water
6 tablespoons (74g) vegetable oil
1/4 cup (85g) honey
2 large eggs
4 cups (482g) King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon instant yeast
And the Glaze: 1 large egg, beaten with 1 tablespoon cold water
Tricky part for any novice like moi is the yeast so, why not complicate it further & make your own? Oy!
Here’s a step by step video but note, yeast is like a pet & once live, it must be cared for & fed almost daily. Are you ready for that type for commitment? I know I’m not…
I went with the regular three strand braid & Voilà !
Next time, I’m going to attempt the 6-braided Challah…it looks simple enough but first, I must master the dough. That I’m finding is not as simple as it seems.
If you’ve tried baking challah or, making homemade yeast, or anything in between, I would love your advise because while mine looked amazing, it tasted very dense. Perhaps I need to stick to the boxed stuff like these blondies I made with the boy a few years ago.
