Tha Many Faces of La Fortuna
Our 4th and final stop is La Fortuna, home to the Arenal Volcano and I, for one, am super excited to see it up close…let’s just hope that it doesn’t choose the next few days to erupt.
Considered one of the youngest of its kind -only 7,000 years of age- Arenal Volcano is an active volcano located in the northwest of Costa Rica. The colossal giant measures at least 5,300 ft and is conically shaped with a crater spanning 460 ft. After spending hundreds of years dormant, in 1968 it erupted and partially destroyed the town below…see, it can happen!
Since it’s eruption, Arenal was named as a National Park and is one of the most visited National Parks in Costa Rica.
Having an active volcano as a neighbor also means that the area around it is a prime location for thermal hot springs. We happen to have one right in our hotel but tomorrow we’re spending the day at the one and only Tabacon!
This area also has some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Costa Rica such as La Fortuna Waterfall, making it a great place to go trekking into the many different trails that exist all over the Arenal Volcano National Park.
We’re spending the day exploring the trails, visiting waterfalls, walking over the hanging bridges, and enjoying the thermal springs plus…at no additional cost, getting covered in lava mud and swimming at the foot of the volcano!
But first, a dip in the hot springs!
