Take Me To Church
For some pizza!
John’s Pizzeria used to be one of my go-to spots when I lived in NYC and worked in Hells Kitchen. It’s not only one of the most delicious pizzas I’ve ever tasted but it’s also housed in one of the most unique spaces, an old Gospel Tabernacle Church…
In 1995, Madeline Castellotti had a vision. Where frightened visitors saw adult shops and violence, Madeline saw potential. It was then when she decided Times Square would be home to the world famous John’s Pizza. After stumbling upon an abandoned church on West 44th Street, Madeline instantly saw the beauty of this old Gospel Tabernacle Church. During her initial tour of its location, the perfectly intact stained glass ceiling caught her attention. It was made up of 8 parts, all equal in size, just like a pizza pie…
In June of 1997, John’s Pizza opened its doors and since then, 2 other locations have sprung up one, across the Hudson River in Jersey City, NJ. and the newest location on Arthur Avenue in the Little Italy section of the Bronx.
All pizzas are made to order in one of their 4 coal-fired brick ovens and like a cast iron pan, ovens season with age, making no two pizzas the same. The 800° coal fired ovens have no thermostats to control heat and are operated by their pizza men who go through months of extensive training.
Tonight, I went with the Margarita with Anchovies…yummy!!!
John’s of Times Square has been voted one of New York’s best pizzas and all I can say is Amen!
